18 Mar Developing an Innu-Centered Environmental Policy
A workshop was held in Sheshatshiu, Labrador with the goal to support the creation of an environmental policy based on Innu values.
The workshop was well attended and included a number of Elders along with members of the Innu Nation Environment Office, Innu Nation Land Claims staff, and community members. The workshop was filled with discussions regarding Innu values that would be central to an environmental policy, as well ways the Innu Nation could make these values core to the development of their environmental policy in the settlement of land claims in preparation for self-government. A similar workshop is being planned and designed for the Innu community of Natuashish.
The workshop involved Trudy Sable and Tony Charles from Saint Mary’s University, along with Lindiwe MacDonald, Senior Aboriginal Advisor, and Veronica Sherwood, Aboriginal Program Coordinator for Environment Canada. A number of meetings, related to the Community Conservation Research Network, were held with Innu Nation project partner and co-researcher, Richard Nuna and Helen Andrew.
